CUT I-III is connected both stylistically with my cycle SOLO XFACH (für Joseph Beuys)
which I have been working on since 1988.

Since 2000 I have been preoccupied with the work of the French philosopher Jean Guitton and this has had a lasting influence on my composing.
The length of the individual as well as the simultaneously performable parts amounts to some five minutes each. In the simultaneous performances the individual parts are successively layered, similar to collage technique in visual art.

CUT I-III is a commission from the Dresden Centre for Contemporary Music for the Ensemble Modern.

Remarks concerning Notation and Performance

CUT I-III are performable individually and simultaneously.
Ordering for individual and simultaneous performances:

CUT I* (5`) — 10«  Pause — CUT II* (5`) — 10«  Pause — CUT III* (5`) — 10«  Pause —
Simultaneous performance of CUT I-III (10`)
(Total time about 25`)

(* In the individual performances the last player must always have finished his part before each 10 second pause.)

Whilst CUT I-III are also performable individually, a simultaneous performance is also possible without prior or following individual performances, always however containing all three pieces.
