JOHN TAVENER (ANH, 1944-2013)

Tavener sinh ở Wembley, London.
Năm 12 tuổi, Tavener bị đưa đến Glyndebourne để nghe  The Magic Flute của Mozart (https://youtu.be/U79YPAYb1Vo) , tác phẩm mà ông yêu thích suốt quãng đời còn lại của mình. Cùng năm đó ông cũng nghe được Canticum Sacrum của Strawasky (https://youtu.be/lE8WE6YIy-M) mà sau này ông mô tả là « mảnh vỡ đánh thức tôi và làm tôi muốn trở thành nhà soạn nhạc

Ông  đã trở thành nghệ sĩ organ và chỉ huy dàn hợp xướng tại Nhà thờ Presbyterian St John’s, Kensingto vào năm 1961

Lần đầu tiên , năm 1968, Tavener nổi lên với bài hát về vị anh hùng dựa trên câu chuyện  Giôna trong Cựu ước, cantata The Whale.

Từ ảnh hưởng của cuộc hôn nhân ngắn ngủi  với nhà soạn nhạc người Hy Lạp Victoria Maragopoulou vào năm 1974, Tavener viết được chamber opera A Gentle Spirit (1977),  kịch bản của của McLarnon dựa trên một câu chuyện của Fyodor Dostoyevsky.

Những khám phá tiếp theo của Tavener về nền văn hoá Nga và Hy Lạp đã dẫn đến Akhmatova Requiem, tác phẩm không mấy thành công.

Thành công lâu dài hơn là bài hát hợp xướng ngắn ngủi The Lamb dựa theo bài thơ « The Lamb » của William Blake, viết vào một buổi chiều năm 1982 cho ngày sinh nhật  của cháu trai Simon, bài hát đơn giản này thường được hát trong các dịp lễ Giáng sinh.

Những tác phẩm nổi tiếng sau đó gồm có The Akathist of Thanksgiving of 1987 , được viết trong lễ kỷ niệm thiên niên kỷ của Nhà thờ Chính thống Nga ,  The Protecting Veil, lần đầu tiên được thực hiện bởi nghệ sĩ cello Steven Isserlis và dàn nhạc giao hưởng London năm 1989, và Song for Athene (1993)

Fall and Resurrection viếtcho hoàng tử xứ Wales, bạn lâu dài của Tavener, được trình diễn lần đầu vào năm 2000

Được viết vào năm 2003, « Pratirūpa » là một tác phẩm kỳ lạ diễn ra như thánh lễ Hindu và, theo cách nói của nhà soạn nhạc, « tác phẩm trình bày một loạt sự tự phản, hòa âm, giai điệu và nhịp điệu  phản ánh sự hiện diện của Thiên Chúa trong mọi hiện hữu” (Written by John Tavener in 2003, “Pratirūpa” is an exotic piece that unfolds like a Hindu ceremony and, in the composer’s words, “presents a series of self-reflecting resonances, harmonies, melodies and rhythms, which attempt to reflect the Divine Presence which resides in every human being.”)

Veil of the Temple viết  năm 2003, dựa trên một số văn bản tôn giáo, trình diễn lần đầu tại nhà thờ Temple, Luân Đôn, được Tavener xác định là  « thành tựu tối cao của cuộc đời tôi ». Trong nhiều năm, John Tavener giữ vững lòng trung thành với đức tin Cơ đốc Chính thống, và âm nhạc của ông phản ánh một sự tập trung thần bí mạnh mẽ trong truyền thống Byzantine và Nga.
